On September 9, the South Street Seaport will close. Pier 17, home of the South Street Seaport’s main attractions will close in preparation of redevelopment. The plan, overseen by the Howard Hughes Corporation, is to expand the pier making room for upscale retail shops, entertainment, and food market. The pier is scheduled to reopen in 2015.
Vendors expressed concern and sadness saying this will be an end to their business.
“History is being destroyed,” one vendor expressed. Another vendor said working at the Seaport is his livelihood and is unsure where he will go next.
