USA Today reports today, that the SEAL Team Six member who killed Osama bin Laden is unemployed and is losing health insurance benefits. The unnamed SEAL finished his military service last September, apparently three years short of the 20 years necessary to get full retirement benefits. The story cites an interview of the former SEAL Team Six member conducted by journalist Phil Bronstein.
"My health care for me and my family stopped at midnight Friday night. I asked if there was some transition from my Tricare to Blue Cross Blue Shield. They said no," the Shooter, as he's referred to in the story, told Bronstein. "You're out of the service, your coverage is over. Thanks for your sixteen years." That is from the USA Today story linked above.
The story identifies Tricare, the health insurance coverage he had while in the service: “Tricare, a health care program of the U.S. Department of Defense Military Health System, provides civilian benefits for military personnel, retirees and their dependents.”
The former SEAL Team Six member will incur costs of $486 per month for health insurance coverage while remaining unemployed and see now job prospects to replace his former income of $60,000 per year that he was earning in the service.
The unnamed shooter was one of 23 members of SEAL Team Six involved in the raid that killed bin Laden. Although he was the second SEAL member, he was the shooter that fired the shot that killed bin Laden.
