Starting quarterback Russell Wilson, three of his Seattle teammates and one of the Seahawks' assistant coaches are sharing their Christian faith, while preparing to face the Denver Broncos in professional football's biggest event of the year - The Super Bowl.
Wilson, offensive tackle Russell Okung, free safety Chris Maragos and long snapper Clint Gresham have appeared along with assistant coach Rocky Seto in a variety of Christian media. The five of them have been featured on TBN cable shows, interviewed by Mars Hill pastor Mark Driscoll for The Resurgence website and been written about in various publication sites like the Christian Post.
Their testimonies are consistent and strong. For example, Seto emphasized to Driscoll that "Jesus us better than anything, better than the Super Bowl, better than an NFL career."
Wilson, who will be the main target of the Broncos defense in Super Bowl XLVIII, believes "at the end of the day, we are all looking for someone to comfort us, somebody to be there fur us at all times. . . That's Jesus. Jesus has always been there. He'll never leave you; never forsake you."
"Jesus is everything!" is the common thread shared by these five men.
They are not knocking the NFL's premier annual sports entertainment event. Maragos explained to Driscoll that the Super Bowl may be "the pinnacle":, but his life would be empty without Jesus.
"To take Jesus, who is perfect, and to be so humble as to come to earth as a mere man and to live the life that He lived despite knowing my sin, to go on the cross and to die for my sin and our sin and everyone's sin – to me, that's everything," Maragos said. "That's joy, that's peace, that's love to think that He and His perfection would do that despite knowing really the depths of who I am."
