With Cleveland being located on the southern shore of Lake Erie, Clevelanders have easy access to fish like walleye and perch for fishing and for eating. What Cleveland does not have is easy access to freshwater shrimp. If you are yearning for the taste of some delectable seafood cuisine then head for the 12th annual Ohio Fish & Shrimp Festival in Urbana, Ohio being held on Friday, September 20 through Sunday, September 22. Urbana is approximately a 3 hour drive from Cleveland.
Ohio Fish & Shrimp Festival A celebration of Ohio's annual freshwater shrimp harvest, the Ohio Fish & Shrimp Festival is taking place at Freshwater Farms of Ohio, Ohio's largest indoor fish hatchery.
Freshwater Farms is a family-owned farm that has been operated by three generations. It raises 10,000 pounds of fish annually and is the state's only producer of fresh trout products.
Freshwater Farms is also the first farm in the world to use a water recirculation system in solar-heated barns to raise rainbow trout while feeding them a sustainable grain-based diet.
There will be mouth-watering seafood selections available for purchase from the Freshwater Farms food booth in addition to a wide variety of other food options including smoked barbecue, corn-on-the-cob, boneless wings, Philly cheese and steak sandwiches and desserts.
Visitors will be able to sample gourmet smoked trout products at the fish farm market and they will also be able to buy freshly harvested shrimp from multiple farmers on Saturday morning but get there early as they sell out quickly.
Attractions at the Ohio Fish & Shrimp Festival include a Trout Feeding Frenzy, a Kids Wet Zone, a sand castle and treasure dig play zone, a wading pool fountain and live musical entertainment (rock, bluegrass, reggae, folk and gospel).
There will be a Shrimp Peeling and Eating Contest (Saturday at 2 p.m.) and there will be extensive displays of live animals including frogs, turtles, fish and other native Ohio creatures.
A highlight at the Festival is a stop at the Sturgeon Pool where you can meet and pet Ohio's largest native fish.
Hours for the Ohio Fish & Shrimp Festival are 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Sunday. General admission is $4. Admission is $2 for children (3-12) and admission is free for children 2 and under. Parking is free.
