“New/Used/Wet/Broken,” featuring sculpture, video and installation work by Jeff Williams, will be on display Friday, January 10 at 1708 Gallery.

An opening reception will be held at 6 p.m. with an artist talk at 6:30 p.m.

Williams, an assistant professor of sculpture at the University of Texas in Austin, “tests the structural limits of materials as well as conventional understandings of where art begins and ends” with his structural experiments, the gallery said in a statement about the artist’s work.

His works are a reminder of “the essence and the decline of American industry,” and suggests that deterioration is a creative process.

“New/Used/Wet/Broken” will be on display through Saturday, February 8.

1708 Gallery is located at 319 West Broad Street and can be reached at 804/643-1708. Gallery hours are Tuesdays-Fridays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
