Scuba Diving at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park

Someone recently told me that you could go scuba diving in Kentucky. My first reaction was “huh?” In my mind, scuba diving was done in crystal blue waters in some tropical destination that took a lot of time and money to get to. I know there are local diving schools, but I rather pictured them learning to dive “just in case”. Wow, silly me! My apologies to the diving enthusiasts and instructors of Kentucky.

With the recent opening of the diving facility at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park in Greenup, Kentucky, local divers get a new opportunity to explore the wonders of this lake.

The new 10-acre scuba refuge will allow divers to use the lake April through October and other designated times from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Divers are required to present their open water certification or have an instructor with them that has an approved certification. Other types of accepted certifications would include Advanced and Rescue Diver. Divers are also required to have a dive buddy and display his or her own diver-down flags. Water depth averages 25 feet. Daily dive fee.

“We look forward to hosting scuba divers and special events at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park,” Parks Commissioner Elaine Walker said in press release. “This is a unique attraction for our park system and will showcase Greenbo Lake to our guests.”

About the park:

The lake is the obvious attraction here, and with good reason. It’s beautiful to look at and there are ample opportunities to boat and fish (as well as dive). The marina is open April 1 through October 31 and offers 65 open slips, rental pontoon boats, row boats, canoes, and motor boats.

The field stone lodge is named in honor of Jesse Hilton Stuart (1906-1984), Poet Laureate and native of Greenup County. His works and personal mementos in the lodge reading room and there are many cozy spots around the lodge to sit, relax or watch wildlife. Most of the rooms have patios or balconies overlooking lovely Greenbo Lake. A limited number of lodge rooms are now available for pets.

Anglers Cove Restaurant presents a varied menu in a casual atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing post-dive meal. Kentucky favorites such as Kentucky Hot Brown and catfish are served.

Around the park you will find: campgrounds, equine camping, an abundance of trials, basketball, tennis, mini-golf, and wildlife viewing areas. A historic school house and furnace are within the park and the amphitheater offers up a variety of performances and events. Birding is another great way to spend time at the park, with warblers, woodpeckers and waterfowl enjoying the lake and hills as much as you are.

There’s an app for that! Visiting Kentucky State Parks has gone mobile. This application has advanced GPS maps packed with trail data, the photo way-point feature allows users to click a photo and record the coordinates of plants, animal life or landscape views. Information about all State Parks with contact information, maps, facilities and activities can be found in the app as well.
