Screen Actors Guild Nominations

See also

This morning saw the announcement of the Screen Actors Guild nominations, with no shortage of surprises to be found among four of the major categories.

Best Actor saw the last minute addition of Forest Whitaker for his performance in "Lee Daniels' The Butler," with surprise snubs going to Joaquin Phoenix for "Her" and Robert Redford for "All is Lost." SAG opted to go with the underwhelming performances of Tom Hanks in "Captain Phillips" and Bruce Dern in "Nebraska" instead.

While Best Actress went exactly as expected, Supporting Actress held a couple of surprises. Oprah Winfrey, who hasn't been getting much notice for her performance in "Lee Daniels' The Butler," gets thrown right back into the race with a surprise nomination here, while June Squibb's unmemorable performance from "Nebraska" also made a surprise appearance.

Best Supporting Actor also had a couple of twists in the inclusion of Barkhad Abdi for his portrayal of a Somali pirate in "Captain Phillips" and Daniel Bruhl from Ron Howard's "Rush." Shockingly, Tom Hanks has been snubbed for his delightful performance as Walt Disney in "Saving Mr. Banks."

Even Best Ensemble had a few unexpected choices. Continuing their love for "Lee Daniels' The Butler," they have also given the film a nod here, as well as a random nomination for "Dallas Buyers Club." I guess they didn't have nearly as much love for "Saving Mr. Banks" as expected.
