Screen Actors Guild Awards Offer Up Some Surprise Winners.

The march towards Oscar gold moved one step closer Sunday night as dozens of A-list Hollywood stars from screen and television gathered for the annual 2012 Screen Actors Guild Awards.  The winners, voted on by the members of SAG, are especially pleased to be honored in this fashion, since the honors come from their own peers in the acting profession.

This year's event was truly star-studded and carried a few surprises. The SAG Awards event usually follows on the heels of previous Hollywood award events; which include the Critics' Choice Awards and The Golden Globes.  All three events are watched closely by the actors and studios as potential indicators of how the voting will go for the ultimate prize, the coveted golden statuette named Oscar.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards broke against conventional wisdom and previous choices in a few areas from previous events.  Jean Dujardin won Best Actor honors for his role in "The Artist".  George Clooney was seen as the favorite for the SAG award after winning both the Critics' Choice Award and Golden Globe for Best Actor for his role in "The Decendants".

Viola Davis won Best Actress for her role in the film, "The Help" over a tough field of fellow nominees which included Meryl Streep, Michelle Williams, Glenn Close and Tilda Swinson.

The film, "The Help" also scored big for actress Octavia Spencer in the Best Supporting Actress category.  A stunning upset seemed to occur as SAG voters chose the cast of "The Help" as well for Best Ensemble over the cast of "The Artist" which has, until Sunday night, seemed to be a shoo-in for all the top honors.

After Sunday's SAG awards, the horse race for Oscar is anyone's guess.  We'll all simply have to wait until Hollywood's biggest night, The Academy Awards; when those familiar words are uttered... "and the Oscar goes to..."
