The promotional flyer for an upcoming tournament offers the following challenge: The good area bowlers now have a chance to prove it.
The flyer is circulating in advance of a scratch tournament, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, at Sarasota Lanes. Starting lanes will be drawn at check-in, which will begin at 12:30 p.m. and end at 1:15 p.m.
Entry fee has been set at $50, with the prize fund based on the number of entries and cash ratio set at 1-in-4. Optional brackets will be available at a cost of $5, and optional high-game jackpots will be offered for $8.
The scratch competition will open with four games of qualifying across eight lanes, and the first cut will be 1-in-4, with all bowlers making the cut being guaranteed to cash. Bowlers making the cut will be entered into match play, with qualifying pinfall being carried over.
Thirty bonus pins will be given to each match-play winner, and the field will be cut in half after each match-play round until a champion is determined. The match-play opponents will be determined by position, with the leader bowling the lowest-scoring qualifier, the No. 2 player bowling the next-to-last qualifier, and so on.
Tournament director Chuck Souzer indicates that entries will be limited for the tournament, so he suggets that prospective entrants either make a reservation or send in an early entry blank and fees.
Complete information and rules for the event can be found on the entry blanks, available at area bowling centers, and Souzer can be contacted at (941) 320-4584.
Next Bobby Combs Century Doubles event at Treasure Lanes on May 5
The series of popular Bobby Combs Century Doubles tournaments will take place in a Port Charlotte venue for the first time, with Treasure Lanes hosting the event at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 5.
The unique tournament format requires doubles teams to consist of partners whose combined ages total 100 or more; hence, the name Century doubles. Format will be three games on a handicap (90 percent of 220) basis.
Entry fee will be $30 per doubles team, plus $5 per bowler for each entry into the optional Alibi Doubles event, in which bowlers use scores rolled by other (non-partner) tournament competitors for qualifying on a separate prize list.
Walk-ins will be accepted, and it is requested that such entrants arrive to check in at least 45 minutes prior to starting time. Keep in mind that there will be a maximum of 55 doubles teams accepted for the May tournament, so early reservations are suggested.
For more information, contact tournament director Sandy Combs at (941) 932-7594, or you may view or download an official entry blank by clicking here.
The Final Frame: Dave Bowers
Dave Bowers, a prominent and well-known member of the Sarasota bowling community, died in mid-March at the age of 74.
Bowers was an avid bowler and golfer, and as longtime owner of Dave's Barber Shop, he was a frequent sponsor of teams in league play, and even though he had to quit bowling due to declining health a few years ago, a team still carries the barber shop's name to this day.
As a bowler, Dave was extremely competitive while being a "fun bowler" at the same time. And he was a better bowler than he probably got credit for. In the first season after AMF Gulf Gate (then Sarasota Galaxy Lanes) opened in 1976, Dave's 190 average was third-high in the center, just behind Gene Ennis' 192 and Bill Herald's 191.
Dave Bowers developed many friendships through barbering, golfing and bowling, and without a doubt, he'll be missed by many.
