We're all looking for ways to stretch a dollar these days, and using craft supplies in new and different ways is a great way to so that. Scrapbooking supplies work perfectly for making handmade greeting cards, which can be quite expensive to buy.

It's easy to work card making into your scrapbooking.

1. When creating a layout, use the scraps from that project to make some cards. The patterned papers used on the layout already match and color coordinated, making it simple to create a card. Add a few simple embellishments and you're all set. Here are some examples.

2. Save those scraps! Even small bits can be re-used in card making.

3. Buy cardstock in neutral colors like white and kraft in multi-packs when it goes on sale. A great source for cardstock in Reno is Michaels at 4871 Kietzke Lane or 165 Los Altos Parkway in Sparks. Purchasing cardstock in bulk is a lot less expensive than buying ready-made blank cards. One sheet of 8.5" X 11" cardstock will make two standard size greeting cards. Just cut the full sheet in two, then fold each piece in half. Watch your newspaper for Michaels coupons.

4. Stock up on envelopes at Office Depot or Target. Standard "invitation" envelopes will fit your cards.

5. This tutorial shows how to make your own envelopes and cards using a sewing machine and some simple scrapbooking supplies.

6. Keep in mind that cards with extra bulky embellishments like buttons or thick ribbon may require extra postage. It's best to take these in to the post office for mailing to be sure there is adequate postage, avoiding having postage due to the recipient.

Making cards is a fun way to get double-duty out of scrapbooking supplies, and it's always nice to send a homemade card to a friend or loved one. You can even wrap up a few cards for a thoughtful gift.
