Despite posting career lows in assists (8) and points (14) Patrick Eaves did set a career high in games played (74) in 2008-09 with the Carolina Hurricanes. That is no small feat for a player with a history of injuries that have kept him out of the lineup for extended periods of time (concussions, shoulder). Eaves got of to a very slow start in 2008-09, not scoring his first goal until December 26 (29 games) and went 17 more games before registering his second goal. He did score his final four goals in a 14 game span. All of his goals, including the playoffs, were scored on the road.

A former first round pick by Ottawa(29th overall, 2003) Eaves was developing into a top six forward with the Senators until a shoulder injury sidelined him for a majority of the 2007-08 season, and he was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes. In 85 games with the Hurricanes since the trade Eaves has just 19 points after scoring 71 points in 157 games for Ottawa. Despite his low offensive numbers over the last two seasons, Eaves has the offensive potential to be a top six forward. He has top-end speed and an above average wrist shot which he can release in full stride. An excellent defensive forward Eaves averaged 1:35 of ice time penalty killing with the Hurricanes in 2008-09 and he is aggressive and dogged in his pursuit of the puck. He is capable of playing center or the wing. A good start could restore his confidence in his offensive game which disappeared in Carolina and vault him back to the 15-20 goal range he displayed in Ottawa. His uncle, Murray, is a former Red Wing (1987-90).
