Not every "Magic: The Gathering" card is made for competitive play, and Scourge of Fleets from "Journey Into Nyx" is a shining example of a "crap rare" casual players on a budget can utilize yet still have a devastating impact on the game. This limited and commander all-star will return almost every creature your opponent controls to their hand, allowing you to attack with your creatures unopposed.
Scourge of Fleets - 5UU
Creature - Kraken (Rare)
When Scourge of Fleets enters the battlefield, return each creature your opponents control with toughness X or less to its owner's hand, where X is the number of Islands you control.
The effectiveness of Scourge of Fleets relies upon controlling many Islands, making it best suited for mono blue decks. If you can survive long enough to "release the kraken" on your opponent, they'll be significantly slowed down.
After Scourge of Fleets is already on the battlefield, you can abuse it with cards that allow you to flicker it such as Roon of the Hidden Realm and Deadeye Navigator...though there may be several hundred other better options to flicker.
Regardless of how "powerful" it may be, Scourge of the Fleets is certainly a flavorful and fun card. This player can't wait to find room for it in our Ramirez DePietro pirate commander deck. Yes, you read that sentence correctly.
How will you use Scourge of Fleets?
