Scott Van Slyke too much for Iowa Cubs

Scott Van Slyke and the Isotopes bullpen were too much for the Iowa Cubs to overcome Saturday night. Iowa (0-3) dropped an 8-3 decision to the Albuquerque Isotopes (3-0) before a crowd of 7,774 in Albuquerque.

Van Slyke did most of the offensive damage for the Isotopes, going 4-for-5 with five RBI on the night. The I-Cubs offense scored in the second inning when pitcher, Brooks Raley grounded in to a fielder’s choice that scored Ryan Sweeney. J.C. Boscan then scored on an errant throw and the Cubs tied the game at 2-2. A double in the third inning by Sweeney scored Brad Nelson and the I-Cubs had a 3-2 lead.

That would be it for the Iowa offense on the evening. The Isotopes bullpen pitched six scoreless innings allowing only four hits. Winning pitcher Chris Withrow (1-0) was impressive on the night, striking out three over two innings pitched in his first appearance at the AAA level. Josh Wall finished the game off for the Isotopes, getting his first save of the season.

Iowa starter Brooks Raley (0-1) gave up four runs on seven hits over four innings. Yoanner Negrin was impressive in his first appearance in 2013 for Iowa. Negrin pitched two innings, striking out three, walking one, and hitting a batter.

Cedar Rapids native Ryan Sweeney was the offensive star of the night for the I-Cubs. In his first appearance with the Cubs, Sweeney reached base in all four plate appearances. Sweeney had three hits, including a double, and also walked once while driving in a run and scoring a run. Logan Watkins added a single and a walk and has reached base eight times over the first three games.

Nick Struck will try and salvage the series finale tomorrow as he goes against Javy Guerra for Albuquerque. Game time is 2:35 CT.
