It has been a tough month for the Lipscomb Academy community with the passing of legendary football coach Glenn McCadams on March 21.
While the school has tried to heal, one of the first steps is moving forward as longtime assistant Scott Tillman has been named as the Interim head coach at Lipscomb Academy for the 2013 season.
After the 2013 season, Lipscomb Academy will find a permanent coach.
"Following the conclusion of this fall's football season, we will launch an official search for a full-time coach," Lipscomb Academy Headmaster Mike Hammond said via a school press release. "It is very important that we take the time to find the right person to lead this outstanding program for years to come."
Tillman, 41, has taught Bible and Psychology and has been an assistant at Lipscomb for the past 19 seasons.
He has served as Defensive Ccordinator and works with both the offensive and defensive lines.
"First and foremost nobody wants to get the job like this but I'm very honored and determined to keep what coach McCadams has built going," Tillman said.
"I feel a lot of emotions right now, very humbled and I think that Coach Mac has been getting me ready for this for the last 19 years."
McCadams, 66, owned a 319-112 overall record and won three state championships at Lipscomb Academy two in Class 2A (1994 and 2002) and one in 3A in 2007 as the Mustangs made seven title game appearances.
His win total placed him sixth on the all time coaching list for the Volunteer State.
In his 31 seasons at Lipscomb Academy, he posted a 288-100 record and the Mustangs made the playoffs 21 times including 18 straight years from 1993-2010.
He passed away on March 21 after battling stage four Mantle Cell Lymphoma.
"Coach Tillman has been an integral part of the Mustang football program as an assistant coach for the past 19 seasons," Hammond said.
"Coach Tillman will build on our tradition of excellence on the playing field, but more importantly will continue to transform boys into men who work to bring glory to God in all that they do."
