Scott sisters released from prison today

The NAACP announced the Scott sisters, Jamie and Gladys, are now free from prison. They reunited with their family today after 16 years of incarceration in Mississippi. The sisters were convicted of participating in an armed robbery that amounted to $11. The women have always claimed their innocence.

Although Gov. Haley Barbour, did not pardon them, he did suspend their sentences for medical reasons. Gladys is free to determine if she is compatible for a kidney donation to her ailing sister. Jamie may continue daily dialysis until a transplant is possible. Equally important, they can pursue these medical options surrounded by family.

"As I watched their reunion, I absorbed every detail, hoping to preserve the memory so I could share it with you," said Derrick Johnson, president of the NAACP Mississippi State Conference. " The sound of the crowd will be in my head for months. The look on Jamie and Gladys' faces will stay with me for years. But, what I will never forget is the feeling of vindication.

"I hope you feel it too. You didn't have to be in Mississippi to be part of this moment," adds Johnson, "without your support this reunion never would have happened."

The NAACP thanks Philadelphians and thousands of people across the nation for standing up for justice.  Click here to link to a news video.
