With the feeling that the viewer has yet to see all there is to see, Scott Phillips’ abstract pieces are painted with acrylics.
“I usually try to mix narratives with abstract approaches,” said the artist in a statement to the gallery. “As in I’ll start with a vivid imagery-based piece and then go about erasing most of the image’s essence with multiple washes and endless layers of thin paint.”
In this way, the artist finds that most definition of the image is blurred while also allowing “enough reality shine through as to attempt a rhythm between two warring parties.”
Phillips’ work will be on view at Eric Schindler Gallery through Friday, April 5.
Eric Schindler Gallery is located at 2305 West Broad Street and can be reached at 804/644-5005. Gallery hours are Wednesday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
