Scotiabank Serge Giroux Golf Dream Classic slated for The Marshes on May 29

The Scotiabank Serge Giroux Golf Dream Classic tees up its 2014 edition at The Marshes Golf Club on May 29.

The fundraising event is a PGA of Ottawa initiative in partnership with community businesses that grants Golf Dreams to children with life-threatening illnesses.

It is one of Canada’s most unique charitable initiatives, combining the generosity of the national capital region’s local community with the goal of sending families on a trip of a lifetime.

As a Pro-Am Event, each participant enjoys an afternoon on the course playing with a local PGA of Canada golf professional while having an opportunity to meet the Golf Dream candidates.

Since 2000, 35 children and their families have been recipients of the Golf Dream. This wouldn’t have been possible without the involvement of the classic’s key sponsors, including Scotiabank (Ottawa/Outaouais Region), Snelling (Randy Graham), Grey, Clark, Shih and Associates (Peter Clark), Royal LePage Team Gale (Kent Browne), Car Canada (Jonathan Donaldson) and the PGA of Ottawa golf professionals.

“Scotiabank is extremely excited to continue our partnership with the Serge Giroux Golf Dream Classic and the PGA of Ottawa,” said Frank Bilodeau, vice president at Scotiabank. “The event allows us to give back to our community and raise awareness and funds for an excellent cause.”

Each year, several deserving children are selected by a committee to participate in the Golf Dream. The event’s namesake, Serge Giroux, was the first candidate, who travelled to Orlando for the Golf Dream. Serge had a big personality, a great sense of humour, and a tremendous passion for life. He passed away shortly after his trip due to complications from his illness, however, his spirit lives on through this event.

In 2014, the classic’s goal is to send two children and their families to Orlando in late October. The children will receive special Disney treatment during their stay such as playing Disney Golf, visiting several Orlando theme parks and a special showing and meeting with the artists from Cirque Du Soleil’s La Nouba.

The day’s schedule starts at noon when lunch will be served. Play begins at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start, and is followed by a reception and food station dining at 6:30 p.m.

The teams are made up of five players - one pro and four amateurs. The entry fees are $250 per amateur and $200 per PGA of Canada golf professional. Entries close May 22.
