Scorpions ready to sting

San Antonio’s NASL team has a name, which was unveiled today at Morgan’s Wonderland.

The new club will be known as San Antonio Scorpions FC, chosen from over 300 suggestions, club owner Gordon Hartman gave the reasons for the decision during a press-conference this afternoon “They are fiesty, tough critters native to South Texas with a fierce reputation... and that’s what we want this team to be.”

That was not the only announcement made on Monday, which opened with Hartman promoting soccer culture in San Antonio, “There is enormous interest in soccer in San Antonio” said Hartman which was confirmed by NASL CEO Aaron Davidson who said “There is unbelievable support for soccer in San Antonio.”

Another major announcement confirmed that all profit will be going to support Morgan’s Wonderland stating “This is about passion not profit”.

Another confirmation was the venue for the team with Hartman unveiling the stadium design and location at the STAR complex, the stadium will begin as a 5400 seat stadium with the view to expand to an 18 000 seat stadium upon entering the MLS, Hartman’s goal for the club.

Hartman appealed to the city so that they could begin work on the stadium by Spring 2011 as the venue needs to be completed by Spring 2012, claiming he needs $8 million more for the work, saying that the stadium would then be community owned.

One final announcement was of the next contest, while the name the team contest is over their will be a new contest to design the logo for the club, with details to come shortly, there is a difficulty in this contest as the club has not yet announced the colors of the club.

Hartman finished with one parting message for Spurs Sports and Entertainment, “early in this process I reached out to another sports group in San Antonio and after five meetings they didn’t want to move forward, I hope they now want to move forward.”

Hartman has certainly put the ball in SSE’s court as excitement builds for soccer in San Antonio.
