A Red Orchid Theatre's A Very Merry Unauthorized Children's Scientology Pageant
Ah, the holiday duplicity continues. It isn’t just A Christmas Carol and It’s a Wonderful Life that will have audiences seeing double post-Thanksgiving. As our dangerously intelligent and witheringly witty colleague Kerry Reid points out, A Very Merry Unauthorized Children’s Scientology Christmas Pageant will also be getting two stagings this holiday season.Could this be the onset of a Thetan conspiracy to win the hearts and minds of Chicagoans for the cause of L. Ron Hubbard’s alien-centric theory of Diuretics Dianetics. We’ll argue there’s no cause for alarm unless we start hearing of Tom Cruise spottings in the area. In the meantime, AVMUCSCP opens Nov. 13 at A Red Orchid Theatre, with 80 percent of last year’s cast of the same show returning. Steve Wilson directs a cast that includes Chaz Allen, Najwa Brown, Jaiden Fallo, Paola Lehman, Adam Rebora, Kara Ryan, Elenna Sindler, and Aria Szalai-Raymond. 16th Street Theatre Artistic Director Ann Filmer choreographs the whole motley crew, while Brandon Magid provides musical direction.
Three weeks later, Evanston’s Next Theatre Company opens the musical expose of the religion that requires women to give birth in silence, insists post-partum depression is a character flaw and dismisses all forms of psychiatry as the work of charlatans of nefarious intent. Is there material better suited for a big, ol’ tap-happy production number? We think not.
