Oreos are as addictive as cocaine according to a new scientific study that was conducted by Neuroscientist Joseph Schroeder from Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut claims the New York Post on Wednesday, October 16.
Tests conducted on rats reveal that Oreos are as addictive as cocaine because the chocolate cookies were found to trigger the brains neurons located in the 'pleasure center.'
Schroeder and his study team also discovered that just like humans, the rats preferred to eat the creme filling from the Oreo first. The scientists also discovered similarities between the levels of addiction in the rats addicted to Oreos, and the ones who were addicted to cocaine.
The test was conducted by placing the lab rats in a maze which lead two two different food treats at the end.One side led to Oreos the other to rice cakes with the rats favoring the Oreo side.

"Just like humans, rats don’t seem to get much pleasure out of eating rice cakes," stated Schroeder.
The studies' results, determined that the rats had a strong preference for the Oreos, and that it compared to those of an identical test involving drugs.

The same maze test was done with cocaine and saline, with rats heading to the cocaine side.

Schroeder added: 'Our research supports the theory that high-fat and high-sugar foods stimulate the brain in the same way that drugs do.
'That may be one reason people have trouble staying away from them and it may be contributing to the obesity epidemic.
'(The results) lend support to the hypothesis that maladaptive eating behaviors contributing to obesity can be compared to drug addiction.'
