Woody Allen's movie Sleeper (1973)
According to science author Hank Hyena’s article, Sexbots Will Give Us Longevity Orgasm in H+ magazine (December 2009), human-robot interaction researcher, Dr. Henrik I. Christensen, of the College of Computing Georgia Institute of Technology and director of the Center for Robotics and Intelligent Machines predicts fully-functioning sex robots by 2011.
Hyena writes:
Remember the most convulsive, brain-ripping climax you ever had…? Sexbots will electrocute our flesh with climaxes twice as gigantic because they’ll be more desirable, patient, eager, and altruistic than their meat-bag competition, plus they’ll be uploaded with supreme sex-skills from millennia of erotic manuals, archives and academic experiments, and their anatomy will feature sexplosive devices…”
The article goes on to mention some of the health benefits of orgasm:
“Orgasms reduce stress, insomnia, heart attacks, migraines, depression, addictions, aches, pains, menstrual cramps, endometriosis, type-2 diabetes, cervical & urinary tract infections, and risk of prostate cancer, plus they improve the immune system, heart rate, blood pressure, brain chemistry, skin health, pelvic floor strength, and they clean out carcinogenic toxins.”
Walter Last, in his article, Healing with Sexual Energy adds:
“Wilhelm Reich was the first scientist to describe the nature and purpose of the orgasm as a discharge of excess bio-energy with the additional liberation of feeling energy, and he also recognized the negative consequences of blocked sexual energies.”
Besides these obvious health benefits, Hyena humorously goes on to mention some psychological and sociological benefits as well. Sexbots don’t have:
… headaches, fatigue, impotence, premature ejaculation, pubic lice, disinterest, menstrual blood, jock strap itch, yeast infections, genital warts, AIDS/HIV, herpes, silly expectations, or inhibiting phobias. Sexbots will never stalk us, rape us, diss us on their blog, weep when we dump them, or tell their friends we were boring in bed. Sexbots will always climax when we climax if we press that little button on their butt.”
But Last mentions that in addition to its dopamine, prolactin and phenylethylamine (PEA, the stuff in cocoa and chocolate) rewards, there are powerful negative neurochemical side-effects after orgasm.
“When we first fall in love we become bonded by rising PEA, oxytocin and dopamine levels. When we are sexually aroused by close contact our dopamine level rises further and at the time of orgasm we have a dopamine brainstorm which one researcher compared to the effects of heroin on the brain. Dopamine is active in all addictions, even in people who have forgotten what sex is. Most of this activity is in the limbic system, the oldest part of the brain.
"After orgasm dopamine levels fall sharply with the usual withdrawal symptoms. This reaction tends to be immediate in males and delayed in females. Also prolactin levels rise, and androgen receptors fall after orgasm. Low testosterone is associated with irritability and anger. In sexually-satiated rats it has been shown that serotonin and endorphin levels also rise, and this also decreases dopamine and raises prolactin levels. Oxytocin levels fall after conventional orgasm but remaining in close contact may help to counter this drop and sustain oxytocin levels.”
These neurochemical changes go on for a couple weeks, making us irritable, anxious and depressed if there is no human bonding and touch to raise the oxytocin levels. Will sexbots replace human contact? Not likely.
Woody Allen prophetically and comically expressed the angst of this dilemma with his Orgasmatron and orb in his film Sleeper (1973). Though Allen’s fictional future society was in 2173, seems we have made a quantum leap a mere 2 years away. Who would have known Allen was the next George Orwell?

She's back!
Oh yes, and where's the love to come from? I'll take that over a mechanically delivered orgasm any day.
since sex is an act of creation, what will be created next through these "real" sex machines? we can all look around and see a world bred in contempt. what about a world made of love? what would that world feel like? maybe in a world of love god could come back, then we all could live in heaven.
Sex with robots? Nothing new here! I've been having sex with robots most of my adult life! They're called wives. A waste of space in most cases. Most times. I could have got considerably more pleasure and entertainment out of a sack of potatoes hung on a fence post!
Yeah, I've been trying to program my wife for years to no avail--where can I preorder? Ha ha.
I loved this article, absolutely sextastic- (though I still enjoy my flesh and blood significant others!)
Jane Fonda made a futuristic movie with this very idea. It was called "Barbarella".
For me this raises the question: Are orgasms, much less artificially amplified ones, really that healthy? While the article you cited boasts clinical research stating the health benefits of orgasms, other research has surfaced in recent years about the chemical imbalances (both in nuerochemicals and in the hormonal/endocrine system) that orgasms create.
Most notably is the so-called "Coolidge Effect" common in mammals where after orgasm the brain produces chemicals that promote disinterest in the partner that was just mated--a genetic carry-over designed to spread genes far and wide. Beyond being a possible detriment to a fulfilling and committed relationship, the further downside is that this wash of post-orgasmic chemicals also contributes to irritability, confusion, and potentially depression. Bigger isn't necessarily better.
Just some food for thought!! A good resource for non-orgasmic sexuality is www.reuniting.info, for those potential few who might be interested ;)
...that will teach me to respond before finishing the entire article :)

Orgasm-centric notions of sexuality need to be challenged.
1. If sexuality could be reduced to the pursuit and experience of orgasm, why would most people even seek out sex with other people? Other than reproduction, what would be the point? Why not just masturbate?
2. Evolutionarily, the orgasm is strongly tied to reproductive processes: ejaculation in males, receiving of ejaculate in females. Yet in humans as well as some of our evolutionary cousins, especially bonobos, most sexual activity actually is not reproductive. It’s unclear why such versatile beings would be necessarily be inclined largely toward orgasm-centric sexuality.
3. We have to remember that the orgasm-centered view of sex is promoted by commercial pornographers. Commercial porn has never done all that well because most healthy people aren’t that interested in watching strangers have sex, especially not enough to pay. Since such people are not so sexually repressed or ignorant about sexuality, pictures and videos of sex acts just are not that interesting. So the porn industry must market their products especially to pathological people and sick societies. Who is more likely to make a reliable customer for porn paysites: someone who may enjoy sex but is not obsessed with it, or a full-blown sex addict who craves orgasms every day and requires ever stronger “doses” of pornography in order to get a good enough fix to have a strong enough orgasm? To ask the question is to answer it.
