Science is all around us, just ask Sara Zimmerman, the author of Unearthed Comics a humorous cartoon book featuring science and science-related comics that celebrate the budding scientist in us all. Written and illustrated by Zimmerman, Unearthed Comics is a webcomic that features relationship, business, science, environmental, parenting and health humor. It is often curated by Zimmerman’s anthropomorphic character, Marilyn Earth and is regularly layered under double-entendres and puns. Zimmerman has been publishing Unearthed Comics online for quite some time, and in June 2013 self-published her first compilation of comics. Now she feels that it is time for her to celebrate the scientist in everyone with a special compilation of science and semi-related comics from the series.
Unearthed Comics: Unearthing Science is slated to appear as a full color, 8.5″ x 8.5″ paperback with 76 pages of art featuring Unearthed Comics’ astronomy, geology, paleontology, biology, meteorology, and other science-related comics. The book itself will include the popular Scientist Vacations, Narcissistic Sun, and T-Rex’s Ride comics that were featured on Scientific American blog and IFLScience on Facebook, as well as many new science comics. Individuals who become backers will receive the opportunity to receive their own signed copy of Unearthed Comics: Unearthing Science as well as other Unearthed Comics’ rewards.
As you can expect, Unearthed Comics: Unearthing Science will make an ideal gift for science students, professors, and working scientists. Still, most “ordinary” people with a basic working understanding and knowledge of the world around them are likely to find humor in the book. For her Kickstarter, Zimmerman is offering pledge levels of all shapes and sizes for students, friends, lab assistants, and more. As a backer, in addition to Unearthed Comics: Unearthing Science, backers are able to receive some Marilyn Earth decals, a signed print or large poster of Scientist Vacations and their own 6″ x 6″ Science Proves the World Goes Round decals.
Science fanatics will have the opportunity to get their own portrait drawn with her famous character, Marilyn Earth in the setting of the backer’s choice as well as a signed print. Gift-givers; with the holidays approaching there are pledge levels with gift-giving options for their science-loving friend, family-member, colleague, or professor. For the webcomic aficionados, what better way is there to back a project like this than to also get the opportunity to have your own comic appear in her book and on her website?
The funds that she raises from her Kickstarter campaign will go towards purchasing art supplies for drawing the comics for her book, Kickstarter fees, Amazon’s publishing fees, costs of prizes, costs and time associated with adding supporters to her website, shipping costs for prizes, and for some of her time so she can pull away from her day job and still eat while completing work on the book.
This project will only be funded if at least$4,000 is pledged by Thursday Oct 31, 3:45pm EDT.
