Science and Nonduality Conference a mind-expanding "Reality" show

According to the song by Three Dog Night, “One is the Loneliest Number,” but those in attendance at this weekend’s Science and Nonduality Conference in San Rafael might beg to differ.

The event, which is equal parts seminar, conference and festival, will host scientists, philosophers and filmmakers amongst others who start their discussions on nonduality with the deceptively simple premise: “We are all one.” The concept of nonduality is a philosophical, spiritual, and scientific understanding of non-separation and fundamental oneness.

“Duality,” as I understand it, is created when we attempt to satisfy our innate need to label…to find our place in the universe, as well as the proper place for everything else we see, feel and experience. The perception of the Dualist deals in specifics. I am me. You are you. We live on this planet and are joined in the cosmos by billions of stars. Time marches on in a straight, inexorable line.

The Nondualist believes there is a deeper reality, one without the structure of opposites like Mind/Matter, Self/Other, Conscious/Unconscious, Illusion/Reality, Spiritual/Material, Beginning/End, Male/Female, Living/Dead and Good/Evil. Heady concepts, to be sure, but for those who ascribe to the philosophy of Nonduality, it really is as simple as “We are all one.”

Top scientists, philosophers, and nondual spiritual practitioners will be speaking on a variety of diverse but related topics, and include Stuart Hameroff, Marilyn Schlitz, Amit Goswami, Henry Stapp, Fred Alan Wolf, Stephen Wolinksy, Francis Lucille, Dean Radin, acclaimed author Daniel Pinchbeck, and many more.

Also appearing this weekend, thanks in part to the luxurious Chancellor Hotel in Union Square, are acclaimed writer-director James Kerwin and producer-actress Chase Masterson (Star Trek: Deep Space 9), promoting the award-winning “Yesterday Was a Lie.” The film is a smoldering, mind-bending examination at what we perceive as our own personal idea of reality, wrapped up in a black and white retro-noir package.

Staunch supporters of the concept of nonduality would say, paradoxically, that the filmmaker has himself created a duality by simply putting pen to paper and writing his ideas down, but that’s a discussion I guarantee Kerwin would love to have with you.

The Science and Nonduality Conference takes place on October 21 through the 25 at the Embassy Suites/Marin Civic Center in San Rafael, California. For event programming and admission, workshop and film screening prices, visit the Science and Nonduality Conference WEBSITE.
