Educators work hard to encourage interest in science. There are many news items about the fact that our students are lacking in science skills, and early childhood educators know that young children can become interested in science is they are exposed to fun, hands-on science activities in the classroom. Communities around the country do their part in providing opportunities for children to participate in science activities outside of the classroom.

Sarasota is fortunate to have many venues to provide children with activities to encourage young children to experiment with a variety of science concepts outside of the classroom. Summertime is the perfect opportunity to explore the community for organizations that are providing summer camps and places to visit that encourage interest in science. Museums are a great source of activities for developing children's interest in science.

Science Summer Camp at the South Florida Museum in Sarasota is sponsoring camp activities on June 30-July 3, with no camp on the 4th of July, for children in grades 2-5, from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. "It's Electric" will give children the opportunity to experiment with electricity in a safe learning environment with great hands-on activities. Children will learn to construct circuits, build electromagnets, and even design a circuit board. Learning activities for how alternative sources for electricity can be found and used are also a part of the museum's summer camp activities for the week.

Interested parents may find information about this summer camp week at South Florida Museum by calling 941-746-4131, ext 13 or by email at abower@southfloridamuseum.org.

Science can be found everywhere. Don't forget your community's museums for great hands-on activities for your children during the summer. They can take these experiences back to the classroom for the fall.
