The website for Rose's Pawn Shop states, "It may come as a surprise to hear the foot-stomping strains of Appalachian bluegrass channeled through a rock band here in Los Angeles." Indeed, that is pretty surprising. But that's a pretty good summary of the band's sound. Dancing on the Gallows kicks off with "Danger Behind the Wheel." This song reminds me a lot of Utah County Swillers. It is a blend of bluegrass, country twang, and punk. It's not quite as raw and loud as Utah County Swillers, but it is played with the same punk rock energy. If this song doesn't get your boots stompin', I'm not sure what will.

The bluegrass influence really shows in "The Well." This song features some prominent fiddle and mandolin and rambling banjo alongside a driving beat. This follow-up to the opener will keep you moving.

While country ("The Bed in which You Lie" brings Dwight Yoakam to mind) and bluegrass are big parts of the band, there is also some heavy-duty rockabilly influence in the guitar of "Ball of Flames."

Rose's Pawn Shop is all about honest (in "Pine Box" Paul Givant laments, "I can't turn water into wine or music into cash.") Americana music that will get you moving. In general if you like your music with a bit of twang, then this is an album you need to have in your collection.

Dancing on the Gallows is available for $14.99 on the band's website.
