Schwindy's indie music spotlight: Deena (Rock River)

I've said it before, loyal reader, but it bears repeating. I am an all-day sucker for sweet-voiced female vocalists. One of those vocalists for whom I am a sucker is Deena. I'm not going to lie. I'm pretty well entranced whenever I hear a new album from this New Jersey singer-songwriter. It would be enough if she provided sweet vocals. However, she does way more than that. Namely, she writes infectious melodies and helps you realize just how important it is to live in the moment.

The new album from Deena is available now
Lila Shoskes

If you want an example of her infectious songs, there are two you should check out for sure. In "Bring it All", her sound takes a turn toward country. Specifically, she does her version of the classic country duet. The only thing is that instead of singing about lost love, she sings about enjoying the love you have. It's not only a good message, but also a song that you'll probably want to sing along with her. Another infectious tune is "All She Wrote". This song is infectious for a lot of reasons. First, the melody is sure to get you bopping your head. Secondly, it's so amazingly positive and bouncy that it's hard to resist this tune. In this tune, Deena sings about some of the simple pleasures in life like playing show tunes and making hotcakes. Meanwhile she invites you to "come on and dance with me." When you hear this song, you just might want to grab the hand of the nearest person and dance. Yes, it really is that catchy.

I'm not a doctor, but allow me to play one for the moment and give you an official prescription. Buy this album. Then when you are in a crummy mood, put this album on. Even if you put this on in the car on the way to a job that you deplore, I can virtually guarantee that it will boost your mood. You might even forget for a moment that you are on your way to your daily eight hours of drudgery. And isn't that what music is all about - helping you forget about the things that bring you down...even if only for a little bit? Deena will most certainly do that.
