She may not have the resume of some of her competitors, but Winnipeg's Brittany Schussler was the best speed skater on Thursday in the women's 3000m at the 2013 Canadian Single Distance Speed Skating Championship in Calgary.
According to Speed Skating Canada, Schussler posted a time of 4:09.51 to beat a field that included Olympic gold medallists Christine Nesbitt of London, Ontario (who finished in second place) and Cindy Klassen of Winnipeg, who finished in third place. Klassen has the world record in the discipline with a time of 3:53.34, that she set at the 2006 World Allround Speed Skating Championship in Calgary.
Nesbitt, who has won the national championship the last two years in the 3000m, is more dominant in the 1000m and 1500m disciplines, competitions where she is the heavy favourite this weekend.
On the men's side, Guillaume Blais-Dufour of Sherbrooke, Quebec won the men's 1500m with a time of 1:45.92.
The national championship continues Friday with the women's 1500m, men's 1000m and men's 5000m.
