Meet Mo Willems

SUNDAY, AUGUST 28  1 pm

Guest Artist and FREE Ice Cream

Award–winning animator, illustrator, and children's book author Mo Willems will read from his books—Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed and I Broke My Trunk—and provide a drawing demonstration. After the reading, Willems will be available to sign his newest Elephant and Piggie book Should I Share My Ice Cream?  Visitors staying for the book signing can also enjoy their own free ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery of Sonoma County (while supplies last)!

During the signing, Willems will sign one book from home and all books purchased at the Museum. His many books include Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! and Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale.

Knuffle Bunny

In anticipation of the event, the Wolfe Family visited the library to check out Mo Willem's Knuffle Bunny stories.  Their mother's helper instantly recalled these books as some of her own family's favorites.  She gathered the children on the couch for a long reading session, and the three of them enjoyed a long session of giggling over whether to pronounce the lead bunny's name as "Kuh-nuffle or Knuffle."

While the Wolfe Family often prefers oral storytelling and classic tales like those written by Elsa Beskow, they also enjoy a few contemporary storybooks from time to time.  Adult ears will tune into some of the values messaging in the Knuffle Bunny tale, such as learning to make friends, be generous, and to have empathy for others.  Parents will thank Mr. Willems for any influence on developing children in those departments!

Families will also enjoy the photos of New York City life that formed the backdrop for much of the Knuffle Bunny illustrations.  What a concept to mix photos and illustrations in a children's book...
