Two familiar foes with Pennsylvania high school state titles who now compete at universities in the Keystone State will face each other for the first time in college at the 2013 NWCA All-Star Classic.
Edinboro University’s A.J. Schopp will wrestle Lehigh’s Mason Beckman in the 133-pound match at the Nov. 2 All-Stars, event organizers announced Tuesday.
Both Schopp and Beckman won Pennsylvania high school state titles… and both went up against each other outside of their collegiate careers. According to the press release announcing the match-up, “Beckman owns a 2-1 lifetime mark against Schopp, splitting during the King of the Mountain tournament during Beckman’s freshman year while at Reynolds High School. Beckman took a freestyle victory over Schopp at the 2012 ASICS University Freestyle Nationals.”
The two have not wrestled each other in college.
Schopp earned All-American honors last year by placing fourth at 133 at the 2013 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. The two-time EWL (Eastern Wrestling League) champ, now a senior, competed at last year’s NWCA All-Star Classic, where he earned a 2-1 win over Minnesota’s Chris Dardanes.
Beckman took a redshirt last season after compiling a 27-11 record as a freshman in 2011-12. He qualified for the 2012 NCAAs in his first year wrestling for Lehigh.
Schopp and Beckman are the first wrestlers from their respective schools to have been named to compete at the 2013 NWCA All-Star Classic. Theirs is the ninth match-up announced for the 48th edition of the All-Stars. Two of the matches are unique out-of-weight-class bouts: Iowa's Tony Ramos vs. Devin Carter of Virginia Tech at 141, and, at 149, Ohio State’s Logan Stieber, and Oklahoma's Kendric Maple.
Other bouts revealed last week that follow the event's traditional format include Minnesota’s Tony Nelson vs. Northwestern’s Mike McMullan at heavyweight… Oregon State’s Taylor Meeks vs. Nelson’s teammate Scott Schiller at 197 pounds… Penn State's Ed Ruth vs. Maryland's Jimmy Sheptock at 184... Oklahoma's Andrew Howe vs. Penn State's Matt Brown at 174... Penn State's David Taylor vs. Iowa State's Michael Moreno at 165... and Cornell’s Nahshon Garrett vs. Oklahoma’s Jarrod Patterson at 125. All these matches – and others to be announced in the coming days -- will take place Nov. 2 at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. just outside Washington, D.C.
An annual fixture on college wrestling schedule since 1967, the NWCA All-Star Classic traditionally features match-ups of the two top wrestlers in each weight class. For the past decade, the event has served as the kickoff for the national college wrestling season.
The 2013 All-Star Classic takes place Saturday, Nov. 2 at 7:15 p.m. Eastern at Patriot Center on the GMU campus in suburban Washington, D.C. To purchase tickets to the event, visit the Ticketmaster website. For more information on the All-Star Classic, visit the NWCA website.
