In an attempt to increase the health of young people in school, the government has stepped in and created guidelines to make kids healthier. This meant that vending machines had to have an overhaul of their contents.
One major change is the replacement of high calorie, high fat and sugary candy bars with granola bars. These high fiber, lower calorie and sugar alternatives are supposed to help kids be healthier. If corn syrup is still the source of sugar in these snack bars, there is still a health issue as this has a direct negative affect on blood sugar. It is however a step in a better direction.
So, the new rules require foods outside the lunch program to meet the same standards of healthiness. The new rules don't impose on bagged lunches, which is the American way. Parents have a say in the health of their children, and if they want their children to have high calorie, sugary fare, they can let their kids brown bag it.
“'This is great news for the country, for children, for families,” Wootan said. “It’s a step toward getting junk food out of vending machines and schools,'” reported bloomberg.com
Having the government dictate is not truly American. This idea of “in-school” vending machines providing healthier snacks is finally balancing things out for kids and parents who want healthier snacks. Should they still offer candy bars as well? The proposed rules have a 60-day comment period for parents to voice their concerns and recommendations.
The idea is that the schools will have healthier snacks on campus, and parents who do want their children to be healthier will not have the school fighting against their efforts with junk food in the vending machines.
