Schools are becoming suspension crazy?

A 10 year old girl in NY was suspended this week for bringing organic  peppermint oil to middle school and sharing it with classmates.   Her mother feels that because of the one day suspension, her daughter is being treated as if she was distributing illicit drugs.

A high school senior in PA decided to wear a Santa Claus suit to school.  He was suspended.  He had already discussed his desire to wear the suit and hand out candy with the Principal who told him it was not a good idea. In fact, he was called to the Dean's office and told he could not wear the suit.  He decided to do it anyway and was suspended or defying authority.  He felt the suspension was unfair.

A preschooler in Texas is on what amounts to in school suspension because he likes to wear his hair long. In fact, he would like to grow out his hair to give to locs of love. His parents will not cut his hair against his will despite the fact that the public school has a short hair for boys rule in the dress code.

Flint Schools in MI suspended 40 children, not for any specific act, but for a pattern of bad behavior.  Parents were called to pick up the students and attend a meeting before students were allowed back in school.

    Very interesting article.

I have no idea what offense was committed with peppermint oil, and no idea why the school cares about the length of a child's hair. The Santa impersonator should get a community award instead of a suspension. As for the 40 in Michigan, it sounds like they suspended those of the wrong side of the "authority" desk. I wish some of these parents would take these matters to court and start to get some serious decisions on when the school "authorities" overstep their "authority".

Ah, I just wrote an article about three of these! I agree that schools are becoming suspension crazy!
