“Friday, August 22 our "Friday Tasting" 5:00 - 7:00 pm ...always ends at 7 pm sharp! --$5.00 fee--

“Kara Kuehl of Vehrs Wine Co.will be pouring selections from Italy:

“Prosecco $15.99

“Brilliant straw yellow. Fresh, elegant fruit. Bubbles extremely fine and lively; fruit-forward. Ideal as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to the entire meal; pairs well with appetizers. Made from the Glera grape.

“Argillae Orvieto 2012 $16.99

“Orvieto is Umbria’s most famous wine. It is a blend of Trebbiano (locally known as Procanico) Grechetto, Chardonnay, “Malvasia di Candia and Sauvignon. This formula enables producers to make the wine in varying degrees of richness. The overall quality of this blend has greatly improved in recent years.

“Color: Straw yellow

“Bouquet: Broad, floral scents with hints of citrus and tropical fruits

“Flavor: Good complexity and correspondence to the nose, with a fruity taste and a lasting, refreshing finish

“Pairings: Hors d’oeuvres, seafood pastas or vegetables and light

“Castelvero Cortese 2012 $9.99

“Castelvero is named after the Antica Contea di Castelvero, a count who once lived on the hills nearCastel Boglione, and has carried this name since 1970. The Castelvero philosophy is to pursue the highest possible quality in the vineyard. Most of the work is done manually, including the rigorous grape selection that takes place during the harvest. A team of three agronomists apply vineyard management techniques with low environmental impact and use organic methods wherever possible. Castelvero has the capacity to vinify even the smallest lots individually, and wines from each site are handled separately.

“Color: Pale yellow with green reflections

“Bouquet: Fresh nose with grapefruit notes and underlying minerality

“Flavor: Light body with pleasing citrus notes

“Pairings: Ideal with light appetizers or fish.

“Maso Poli Pinot Noir $24.99

“The “Pinot” vines are originally from the Burgundy and they came to Trentino via Germany around the beginning of the last “century. Here they have found their ideal habitat in the cold-temperate climate.

“Color: Soft ruby red

“Bouquet: Intense and fine with notes of wild berries and black currants

“Flavor: Dry with a delicate aftertaste

“Pairings: Suitable for meats with delicate flavors such as filets, chops and grilled meats

“Lechthaler Teroldego $12.95

“In the framework of the Trentino’s enology, Teroldego has always played a role of great prestige. The vast flat area in the province of Trento known as the Campo Rotaliano has proved to be a highly favorable habitat for the varietal. Thanks to “Teroldego Rotaliano’s fine sensory qualities and the outstanding techniques applied in cultivating the grapes and making the wine, its reputation has grown throughout the centuries, as was recognized in 1971 with the assignment of the official DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata), now referred to as DOP (Denominazione di Origine Protetta).

“Color: Intense ruby red

“Bouquet: Bright nose of ripe black cherry, distinct sweet earth and tobacco

“Flavor: Smooth texture with notes of cherries, black raspberry, earth, and a touch of spice with ample acidity and medium tannins

Pairings: Pairs well with vegetarian dishes, fish, poultry, pork and beef.

“Argiano NC $23.99

“This wine’s initials, NC, are often thought to refer to Noemi Cinzano, Argiano’s longstanding owner. However, Non Confunditur is a Latin term meaning “do not be mistaken”- This is the motto of the Lovatelli family, written on the family crest which appears on the label. This wine is not to be mistaken for any of Argiano’s other wines which exclusively use either Tuscan or French varietals. NC, in contrast, is a unique marriage of both. It is a great example of how a red wine can retain a lovely freshness while expressing the toasty flavors of restrained oak aging.

“Color: Ruby red

“Bouquet: Red fruit and spicy, black currant with earthy notes

“Flavor: Full body, soft tannins and a long finish; round red wine for early to mid-term drinking

“Pairings: Homemade pastas, meat sauces, mushroom-based sauces or truffle-based sauces

...and there may be a mystery wine at Dave's desk”

2222 NW Quimby St.
(off 22nd Ave.)

“Our select samplers are poured on Saturday, starting at noon and until the well runs dry.

Nothing scheduled for Friday, August 22nd

“aturday , g. 23 On arrival from France: Marigny-Neuf Sauvignon, Dom. de Brin Petit Brin, Bouchard Bourgogne Chardonnay, Laurent Martray Côte de Brouilly, and Dom. La Tour Boisée Plantation 1905.”

“Island Reds; Corsica, Sicily, Sardinia, Greece & Crete ($15)

Friday August 22nd 2014 4 pm - 7:30 pm @ Mt Tabor Fine Wines

“It's the perfect time of the year for a wine tour of the Meditteranean Islands. When I was on the hunt for an interesting set of wines I wasn't expecting to find a simply delicious red from Crete. Don't know about you but I can count on one hand the wines I've had from Crete. And this is surley the first time I've tasted that ever popular grape, Kotsifali.

“I can remember 18 yeras ago when we first opened the shop one of the very first "values" we stacked up front was the Perdera from Argiolas. It's gone up a couple of bucks but so has the quality. Again, you know me with this fascination for the wines of Corsica and I finally found a terrific estate that has a beautiful white, rosé and red, all priced at the very fair price of $21. That's been the only stumbling block for the cutting edge wines of Corsica; high prices.

“We've been featuring the wines of Kir- Yianni for years and the Ramnista has always been my favorite red. I'll tell you this, no other wine growing area has come so far in increasing the quality of its wines than Greece.

“Do yourself a favor and search out the awesome reds and whites from Greece. Don't be put off by unusual grape names like Assyryiko, Athiri and Xinomavro. You can only expand and grow your wine IQ.

“Then we come to the beautiful, elegant grape known as Frappato. I can't think of a better example than the one crafted by Cos winery out of Sicily.

“And finally we come to one of the newer, geekier growing places on the planet, the unique soils on the slopes of Mt Etna on Sicily. The predominant grapes for the reds are the Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. Again, like the Frappato, these wines are a far cry from the pruny, overripe wines that often come from the flatlands of Sicily.”

“That sounds like a heck of a lineup to me. As I like to say get out of the comfort zone of your Pinot, Cabs and Syrahs and make the jump to something different. You will almost surely be glad you did.”

The Lineup

2011 Alexakis Winery, Kotsifali/ Syrah Heraklion, Crete 60%/ 40% $15

2011 Argiolas, Perdera "Monica di Sardegna" Sisini Estates, Sardinia Monica D S, Carignano, Bovale Sardo $17

2013 Clos Alivu, Nielluccia Patramonio, Corsica $21

2009 Kir-Yianni, Ramnista Naoussa, Greece Xinomavro $21

2012 Azienda Agricola Cos, Frappato Bastonaca Vittoria, Sicily 100% Frappato $27

Premium Pour ($5)

2010 Tenuta Terre Nere, Etna Rosso "Caldera Sottana" $47

Mt. Etna, Sicily Nerello Mascalese/ Nerello Cappuccio

“And don't forget that next week Friday, August 29th, we'll be featuring Oregon Pinot Noir and a Red Burgundy premium pour. If you can't join us this Friday for the Island Reds, we're looking forward to seeing you next Friday!”
