“Meet me after school” was the code for “we’re going to fight” back in the day. And back in the day, those school yard fights had unwritten rules: no knives, guns, or chains – and closed fisted punches to the face were the exception rather than the rule. There were always crowds gathered for the big event. But those school yard brawls mostly involved pushing and shoving and wrestling moves with the loser ending up either in a headlock or someone sitting on his chest until he “gave up”. Blame it on the violence in movies or TV, or today’s access to social media venues like facebook and YouTube; but as the years have gone by, schoolyard fights have taken on a much more vicious nature – like the fight by Broadneck High School in Anne Arundel Co., MD yesterday that sent one teen to Shock Trauma.
The fight involved a 15-year old student at Broaddneck HS, and a former 18-year old student considered to be the victim in this case. According to CBS Baltimore (WJZ):
Minutes after Broadneck High School’s dismissal, the two teens traded punches surrounded by a crowd.
“About 75 kids filming on their cell phones, on their cameras to post on YouTube and Facebook later,” said neighbor Jeanne Garrett.
The 18-year-old was hit in the head, fell to the ground, and started having a seizure. But witnesses claim the 15-year-old kept hitting him.
By the time paramedics got to the scene, the 18-year-old was seriously injured and had to be airlifted to Shock Trauma.
WJZ reports that the 18-year old had surgery last night and is expected to survive.
No weapons were used in the fight. Police have not yet filed charges against the 15 year old. ~ WJZ
Also back in the day, one of those unwritten rules was - when a man was down, he was down – fight over. We didn’t keep pounding on our opponent if he was convulsing or unconscious.
