School shootings a record number in 2013 year in review

  1. Jan. 10th in Taft, California at Taft Union High School 16-year-old Bryan Oliver shot and wounded 16-year-old Bowie Cleveland. Teacher Ryan Heber was grazed by a bullet in the shooting.
  2. Jan. 11th in Detroit, Michigan after a school basketball game a16-year-old was shot across the street from Osborn High School. He was hospitalized in serious condition.
  3. Jan. 15th in St. Louis, Missouri Sean Johnson, a student at Stevens Institute of Business & Art shot Financial Aid Officer Greg Elsenreth in the chest then shot himself in the torso. Both were admitted to the hospital.
  4. Also, Jan.15th in Hazard, Kentucky Dalton Stidham aka Dalton Miller shot and killed 12-year-old Taylor Cornett, 20 year-old Caitlin Cornett and 53 year-old Jackie Cornett in a parking lot of Hazard Community and Technical College.
  5. Jan.16th in Chicago, Illinois 17-year-old Tyrone Lawson was fatally shot in the parking lot of Chicago State University after a high school basketball game between Simeon High and Morgan Park High that was held on the campus. Lawson was a senior at Morgan Park High School.
  6. Jan. 22nd in Houston, Texas at Lone Star College outside the Academic Building two males were arguing and three males were reported shot. According to the shooter has been identified as Carlton Berry, 22-years-old. One of the shooters may have shot himself putting his gun away.
  7. Jan. 29th in Midland City, Alabama. Jimmy Lee Dykes boarded a school bus, shot and killed 66-year-old Albert Portland, Jr. and abducted a 6-year-old boy and held him in an underground bunker for several days.
  8. Jan. 31st in Atlanta, Georgia a fourteen-year-old male student was shot in the back of the neck by another 14-year-old student at Price Middle School during an argument with another student.
  9. March 18th in Orlando, Florida University of Central Florida student 30-year-old James Oliver Seevakumaran seemed to have shot and killed himself in his dorm room after pulling a fire alarm perhaps to attract students in the open to be shot. He was in the process of being removed from the dormitory.
  10. April 19th in Cambridge, Massachusetts at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 26-year-old Police Officer Sean Collier was shot several times while sitting in his police cruiser.
  11. April 29th in Cincinnati, Ohio student, Joe Poynter, shot himself at LaSalle High School in an attempt at suicide.
  12. June 7th in Santa Monica, California shooter John Zawahri was shot and killed by police officers. Zawahri is allegedly responsible for shooting and killing six people, including himself and injuring four others some on the campus library of Santa Monica College others in cars and on a bus and in the house fire in which his family perished.
  13. August 20th in Decatur, Georgia 20-year-old Michael Brandon Hill allegedly fired six shots into the front office of Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy Elementary School. He was talked into surrendering by school employee Antoinette Tufts. No one was hurt.
  14. August 30th in Winston Salem, North Carolina 18-year-old Christopher Lamont Richardson allegedly shot 15-year-old Antwain Deshaun Porter in the chest and shoulders at Carver High School.
  15. Sept. 8th in Lansing, Michigan four students were shot outside of J. W. Sexton High School and were hospitalized.
  16. Oct. 4th in Pine Hills Florida a fight broke out and gun shots were fired in the parking lot of the Agape Christian Academy striking a 16-year-old in the hip and a 17-year-old in the ankle.
  17. Oct. 15th in Austin, Texas a 17-year-old junior sitting in the courtyard of Lanier High School fatally shot himself.
  18. Oct. 21st in Sparks, Nevada a 12-year-old seventh-grade student Jose Reyes shot and killed teacher Michael Landsberry, wounded two students then killed himself on the basketball court of Sparks Middle School.
  19. Nov. 2nd in Greensboro, North Carolina Devine Eatmon, 21 was shot at North Carolina A&T State University. He was hospitalized.
  20. Nov. 13th in Pittsburgh, PA three students from Brashear High School were shot walking home from school. They were hospitalized.
  21. Dec. 4th in West Orange, Florida Ja'Roderick Smith, 15, was shot outside West Orange High School. He was hospitalized.
  22. Dec. 13th in Centennial, Colorado at Arapahoe High School 18-year-old student, Karl Pierson, shot and killed 17-year-old Claire Davis.

It is unclear the reasons for the many shootings. Some may be the results of bullying. Others are the consequences of hate, anger or drugs. We can only look forward to peace in the upcoming 2014 school year.
