57-year old professor Matthew Rouche at Northwest Missouri State University was arrested after he allegedly posted on Facebook about going to the top of bell tower with weapons. According to the Kansas City Star, it was unclear if the communication's instructor was joking. I have to ask, at what point would any teacher; college or K-12, think that it is logically sound to joke about taking weapons to the top of a bell tower?
In August 1966, Charles Witman, a student and washed out soldier of the Marine Corp, did just that. He went to the top of the bell tower at the University of Texas in Austin and engaged in a killing spree. At this time, it appears that the teacher was arrested but not charged. University Provost Douglas N. Dunham said officials became aware of the post on Wednesday and university police contacted the faculty member, who was removed from campus. In the post, he said that by October “I’ll be wanting to get up to the top of the bell tower with a high powered rifle—with a good scope, and probably a Gatling gun as well.”
On Friday afternoon, Rouch was charged with two drug-related offenses that include possession of a controlled substance and a second charge relating to distribution, manufacturing or producing of a controlled substance.
Again, I have to ask with all the recent high profiled school shootings over the last decade, at what point would he have thought his comments were logical and without consequences?
