School systems hire security staff to help protect students and keep them safe. But what happens is that those who are to protect sometimes become the predators. A security guard at an Oakland County school was arraigned yesterday on charges stemming from sexually explicit photos sent to a female student. Benjamin Thomas Lawrence is a 23 year-old working at Stoney Creek High School in Rochester.
WXYZ.com reported that Lawrence was accused by the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office of using his cell phone to text photos of his genitals to a 15 year-old student at the school. He was also charged with Distributing Sexually Explicit, Visual or Verbal Matter to Children. During his arraignment yesterday, Dec. 19, the Prosecutor's Office added the charge of 2nd degree criminal sexual conduct to the list.
Benjamin Thomas Lawrence was given a $25,000 personal bond and ordered to stay away from any Rochester Community School District property. To protect the minor in this case he was also ordered to stay away from the victim and not to be alone with any minors. Lawrence’s next appearance in court is scheduled on Jan. 14, 2014
The Oakland Sheriff Detectives are checking for additional victims. They feel that this is not the first time Lawrence has sent sexually explicit photos to a minor. If anyone has additional information, please call the Sheriff’s Department at 248-858-4911.
