Henderson Public Libraries are once again hosting their annual "Summer Reading Program," bu this time with a "Syn-ful" twist! This year, Henderson Libraries has pulled out all the stops as their Summer Reading Challenge goes 'geek" with the non-profit Syn Shop: The Las Vegas Hackerspace. The kickoff event will be held on Saturday, June 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at all three main Henderson libraries: Paseo Verde, 280 S. Green Valley Pkwy; Green Valley Library, 2797 N. Green Valley Library; and Gibson Library, 100 W. Lake Mead Pkwy.

All events are free to the public as a promotion to keep on reading, and different locations will have various activities, including a deconstruction table, a vegetable organ, electric vehicles and robotics, Lego's and more. Kids and adults are encouraged to sign up for the challenge, where participants can win prizes for reading during summer. Science is the challenge theme: "Fizz Boom Read" for children up to the age of 11 years; "Spark a Reaction" for older tweens and teens from 12 to 17; and "Library Elements" for adults over the age of 18.

“The Summer Reading Challenge provides a fun way for families to enjoy reading together – whether it’s inside escaping from the heat or down by the pool,” said Stephen Platt, manager for the Green Valley Library.

According to the media release, sponsors include The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Great Harvest Bread Co. and Shark Reef Aquarium. Other organizations participating in the kickoff events include Springs Preserve, Coronado Robotics club, Henderson Space and Science Center, and the Natural History Museum.

Syn Shop: The Las Vegas Hackerspace, local volunteers and technology organizations will be hosting tables of "hands-on" science and tech-related activities, with demos and interactive activities for the whole family. Kickoff activities are part of Generation Stream, a science and technology-related learning grant funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (a federal agency) and the Nevada State Library (a state agency). Syn Shop: The Las Vegas Hackerspace, was started in 2008 by a group of makers, artists, innovators and inventors who decided to work together on research, development and project creation, promoting a love of collaborative learning.

The Summer Reading Program will run from June 7 through Aug. 23. For more information or to sign up to participate in Henderson Libraries’ Summer Reading Challenge, visit the website or call 702-492-6581 and keep on reading!
