The start of July marks the second half of the calendar year. It also marks the last month of summer vacation for students who attend Phoenix’s Colleges and Universities. In addition to the new class schedules and living quarters, new and returning students will also be greeted by a tuition increase.
The Arizona Board of Regents sets the tuition level for all of Arizona’s Public Universities and the Maricopa County Community Colleges District governing board for all of Maricopa County’s 2 year schools. The tuition rate is the determined by the cost to provide continued quality education to its students and the amount that this cost is offset by state funding. For the 2011-2012 academic year the total cuts in state funding to Arizona’s Colleges and Universities will be about $104 million dollars.
To wit, returning resident Arizona State students (all campuses) can expect pay an average of 13.1% more than they did last year, while new resident and non-resident students will pay on average 12.4% more than last year. Maricopa County Community College in-county students will pay about 7% more and out-state student about 1.6 % more than last. The tuition for out-of-county students has yet to be determined.
Classes begin August 15 for ASU and August 20 for Maricopa County Community Colleges.
*Statistics are an average of all increases for all returning and new students.
