School bus driver shot dead in Alabama: Suspect kidnaps child

In southeastern Alabama, a man got on a school bus on Tuesday, fatally shot the bus driver and kidnapped a 6-year-old before escaping to an underground bunker according to The Associated Press report late Jan. 29. The suspect took the child to an area behind a nearby church and police were trying to bargain with the man late Tuesday evening. As of 12:10 p.m. ET, reports were indicating that the child was still with the man and is "okay".

According to what the Dale County Sheriff told WBMA-TV, the suspect insisted a child be let off the bus with him. The suspect shot the driver when he refused to let the child go with him. The driver died of gunshot wounds.

A neighbor of the suspected shooter, Michael Creel, told The Dothan Eagle newspaper that his sister heard gunshots so he went outside and he say children running away from the bus. Creel was told by a little girl that the shooter had boarded the bus and insisted that two children aged 6-8 go with him. A number of agencies were on the scene, including a bomb unit, beside a rural highway near Midland City the Dale County Sheriff's Department stated.
