HENRY COUNTY SCHOOLS MCDONOUGH, GA December 9, 2013. Just hours from now at 7 p.m. the Henry County Board of Education will decide how or if it will change the Attendance Zone for Union Grove Parents, living along the east side of the GA Hwy 42 corridor just north of McDonough.
At the last four Board meetings parents have asked, threatened, cajoled, and picketed against moving their Attendance Zone to that of Eagle’s Land High and Middle School.
Of the Hours of comments made in October here, here, and here; then in November here, and here, here, and here; and earlier this month at the Study Session here, and here only two clear academic reasons were apparent.
Eagle’s Landing - Middle and High does not have an Orchestra Program, or teach German as a Foreign Language.
There were several points made that touches on darker reasons.
From the chart above you can see:
- Twice as many Economically Disadvantaged children attend Eagle’s Landing, as does Union Grove.
- Eagle’s Landings ethnic composition is uniquely different from that of Union Grove.
Additional questions and concerns:
- Wanted to know why the construction raising Eagle’s Landings sub-par facilities to a standard roughly equal those of newer high schools, like Union Grove. Was not spent expanding Union Grove so they would not have to rezone.
- Home values would decrease.
In all this, no one has stepped forward to publicly state the many academic accomplishments, Eagle’s Landing High Students, have accomplished in the last few years.
Following is a short list of accomplishments due to space limitations:
