Haley Bullwinkle went to school at Canyon High School in Anaheim Hills, California wearing an NRA shirt given to her by father, and was told to take it off by school administrators. The school district has a policy against “offensive, violent, or divisive clothing.” Bullwinkle was told the shirt violated that policy because it shows a silhouette of a hunter. The school backed down and apologized after the National Rifle Association allegedly threatened to file a lawsuit.
Breitbart News reported on the incident, “According to an NRA news release, Orange County School superintendent Michael L. Christensen announced today that Haley's NRA shirt "was not contrary to the school dress code policy and the student will be permitted to wear the shirt. Haley and her family also received an apology and "assurance that training will be provided to staff" so this kind of thing does not happen again.”
The school changed its policy after the incident got news coverage. Michael Christensen, Superintendent of the Orange Unified School District, issued this statement, “Campus staff will be trained so that an incident like this does not occur again. The student will be permitted to wear the shirt.”
Bullwinkle said she will wear the shirt again and believes in exercising her freedom of speech to do so. “I feel like it's a symbol of my rights I'm supposed to have as an American,” said Haley Bullwinkle.
