College-bound seniors who attend Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) schools can apply for two newly created scholarships given by the Pasadena Water and Power Department (PWP). The deadline is midnight on April 18, 2014.
The scholarships of $5,000 (first place) and $1,000 (second place) will be awarded to the students best meet the criteria in devising creative new ways to promote water conservation and renewable energy.
“We meet so many bright young students each year during community events and field trips, and they’re always so willing to share their excitement and ideas,” PWP General Manager Phyllis E. Currie said. “This is our way of harnessing that creativity for the good of the community while preparing the next generation for higher education and the workforce.”
Students must provide proof of acceptance for the 2014-15 school year to any accredited two-year or four-year college or university. Applicants must write a statement of 300 words to 500 words answering one of these questions:
- Water scarcity is a major issue and topic of concern. How can Pasadena Water and Power do a better job of communicating the importance of water conservation to young adults? OR
- Renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power are going to play an important role in our future. What type of energy source do you feel is best for our environment?
Applications must be submitted via email; applicants may utilize computers and internet resources for free at the Pasadena Public Library if they do not have access at home or school. Awardees will be notified by email by April 28, 2014 and presented with their awards at Pasadena’s annual Earth and Arts Festival on May 3, 2014 at Memorial Park.
PWP hopes to continue to award these scholarships annually. For complete details and to download an application in Microsoft Word, students can visit www.PWPweb.com/Scholarship. Applicants can also call (626) 744-6970 for information in English and Spanish.
