Schnur, who is 18 years old, upset Philip Bester of Vancouver 7-6, 3-6, 7-6. Schnur, who is ranked 820th in the world, got some revenge on Bester, who is ranked 509th. Schnur lost to Bester 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 in the final of a tournament in Kelowna, British Columbia in early July.
Schnur will reportedly play smaller professional tournaments until the end of 2013 before joining the University of North Carolina as a freshman in January.
One high profile tennis player that has found great success after going the NCAA route is John Isner, who this past weekend advanced to the final of the ATP Tennis Masters Series event in Cincinnati before losing to French Open champion Rafael Nadal. From 2004-2007, Isner starred at the University of Georgia.
Meanwhile, Americans Jean-Yves Aubone and Dennis Nevolo won the doubles championship.
