Dr. Smith, from Pet Physical Therapy (PetPT), a veterinary rehabilitation and physical medicine facility in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, is reputed to work miracles with water therapy for dogs. This therapy is essential for Schmiegel's recovery due to his atrophied legs.
Kathy McGuire, president of New Jersey Aid for Animals (NJAFA), is temporarily caring for Schmiegel until he's well enough for adoption. She took Schmiegel in for an appointment this afternoon and Dr. Smith donated his first hour of consultative services and Schmiegel's pool time! When the doctor palpated Schmiegel, the poor puppy was in pain in his back and hips. According to the doctor, Schmiegel's growth and teeth are stunted due to lack of nutrtition.
"Today was a little frightening for Schmiegel but the doctor said he did very well," said McGuire. "We're getting the little boy on fish oil, glucosomine, and some pain meds."
Dr. Smith said Schmiegel is still very thin (a 3 on a body scale of 1 to 9 with 5 being best), and that Schmiegel will benefit greatly from the soothing water therapy.
"Give a shout-out to Dr. Smith, who donated well over 100 dollars worth of time!" said McGuire. "Needless to say, Schmiegel is one tuckered out little puppy." Check out the slideshow (left) for other pictures of Schmiegel from this afternoon.
McGuire will be taking Schmiegel back for appointments twice a week for the next two weeks.
