Schleif, 92, on trial for inattentive driving; does the Law of Attraction apply?

Mabel Schleif, 92, is on trial in Ramsey County, for alleged inattentive driving and failure to use due care, causing injuries.  Schleif’s Buick Century hit public works employees, Craig Johnson and Thomas Haack, who were cleaning up debris under the Interstate 94 overpass on April 26.  Both Haack and Johnson were severely injured in the accident.  Johnson lost his hand and part of his arm in the accident and additionally suffered several broken bones.  Both Haack and Johnson have a limp and have been unable to work since the accident.  While Mable Schleif may or may not be found guilty and the charges against her are gross misdemeanors, Haack and Johnson will be impacted for life.

I have written about the ‘Law of Attraction’ many times.  The laws of attraction state that whatever we are thinking, we draw to our self. Our thoughts eventually create our reality. When we purposefully think about something we want to occur, it is called “intending,” When we intend our energy to create or alter an aspect of our reality and then live as if this change has already occurred or will occur, in many instances our reality is thus shaped anew.

Authors have written about this law for centuries.  In Rhonda Byrnes book, The Secret, she quoted Dr. Joe Vitale saying: “Everything that surrounds you right now in your life, including the things you’re complaining about, you’ve attracted…. You’re going to immediately say, “I didn’t attract the car accident…. And I’m here to be a little bit in your face and to say, yes you did attract it’.”

We learn that thoughts can affect our general health; and that when someone is stressed and very negative they are more likely to become ill. A Mayo Clinic study showed positive thinking increased life span, lowered rates of depression, lowered levels of distress, showed a greater resistance to the common cold, reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease, and showed better coping skills during hardships and times of stress. It is another belief entirely, however to accuse or blame someone for the unfortunate fate that may befall him or her. Although the law of attraction is powerful, there are exclusions to successfully implementing it.  I don’t believe that Haack or Johnson in any way drew this accident to them, nor did Schleif purposely cause this devastating accident.

The five main exclusions to the law of attraction are:

  1. Conflict with a life plan: if we plan a life to learn certain lessons and our intending doesn’t correspond or is in conflict with our life plan, we may not be able to attain what we are drawing to our self.
  2. Conflict with Interconnectedness issue: a karmic debt being repaid.
  3. Conflict with free will: when the free will of one or several individuals affects our life (as Schleif supposedly did, when driving her Buick into Haack and Johnson.)
  4. Conflict within the family or location you were born: genetic predispositions to illness, environmental contaminants, etc. fall into this category.
  5. Natural disaster: tornadoes, hurricanes, fires, tsunamis, earthquakes, floods, etc.

So while the ‘Law of Attraction’ is very powerful, we should remember compassion, empathy, and inclusiveness towards others.
