If you're new to Seattle, it's time to take a hike. Now that summer's in full swing, you may have noticed that Seattleites are emerging from hibernation, they're smiling, and they're spending as much time as possible outdoors.
Even if you're a bit of a city slicker, part of being a Seattleite means getting out of town and into nature once in a while. The good news is, there are plenty of resources to help you prepare for your first hike and countless trails that are great for beginners. So lace up your hiking boots and check out one of these great hikes nearby:
- Carkeek Park: You don't have to drive far to find a hike that offers amazing views of Puget Sound and the Olympics. Head to Carkeek Park in northwest Seattle, and spend the day on their urban hiking trails. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
- Day Hikes at Mt. Rainier: Mt. Rainier is a bit of a drive, but it's worth it, especially while the wildflower meadows are in bloom. There are some great day hikes, ranging from 20-mintue strolls to 4-hour trails, that the whole family can enjoy.
- Twin Falls: This is a little hike with big payoff. Great for beginners, visitors, and families with kids, this trail has a beautiful resting area/viewpoint at under a mile in. Continue on the rest of the trail for another mile for an even better view.
- Coal Creek Trail, Cougar Mountain: Go to the Alps without getting on a plane -- the Issaquah Alps, that is. Cougar Mountain has a variety of trails to suit all ability levels, but Coal Creek trail is especially ideal for beginners.
This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to beautiful trails around Seattle, so don't stop here. But be warned -- hiking is addictive. Every hike just might make you fall a little more deeply in love with the Pacific Northwest.
