Scars of Mirrodin draft: Green

Many drafters entering the robust multifaceted Scars of Mirrodin environment associate green with the often attempted and sometimes sketchy black/green infect strategy (which is likely being forced by individuals who picked a pack one, pick one Hand of the Praetors, Putrefax, or Skittles)

While green has a lot going for it infect-wise, all too often entry-level Scars of Mirrodin players will completely overlook some of the best cards in green, and in the format itself. Let’s take a look at some of these incredibly potent additions to a green package that may not contain a single infect card.

Slice in Twain: Shatter is a pretty solid card in this format, right? So how about a Shatter that doesn’t cost a card? Yeah, this card is an amazing removal option and rightfully does get picked very high.

Sylvok Replica: Yeah, it’s an artifact, but to really use it you’ll be running green. An ideal early game blocker who can suck up a few infect hits before being utilized as a block/destroy combo on your opponent’s best toys. Combine with Molder Beast for a generous boost to our trampling friend’s assault power.

Acid Web Spider: A free equipment destruction spell attached to an amazing large and sturdy body that will disrupt and stop some of the more dominant, powerful strategies in the format. A single spider can stop an entire legion of Glint Hawks, Glint Hawk Idols, and even Sky Eel Schools. Your ground dinosaurs can attack in confidence knowing your spider has your defenses covered. This card is often overlooked and often passed – don’t pass up on the value.

Molder Beast: Pack your deck chock full of recyclable spellbombs and Sylvok Replicas and watch this trampling terror consume your opponent in one to two well timed blows. Often available later than the other cards previously discussed here and a very serviceable green soldier.

Alpha Tyrranax: A modified Craw Wurm, this creature is always available late and we’re never disappointed to run one or even two depending on the deck. This is some great late pick value, usually in the tail-end of the pack.

Viridian Revel: Your opponent will be running plenty of artifacts, why not get paid off every time one dies? Turn those spellbombs on their side of the field into free cards, make your opponent pay for Perilous Myr and Necropede value. We like to include one of these – if the opponent has something that’s not running a lot of artifacts (rare), then we’ll board it out after game one.  Also available very late.

Scars of Mirrodin drafts include non-infect options for both green and black players that can get “lost in the shuffle”, but can create absurd value and excellent decks.
