Scarborough Town Centre cleaners keep their jobs

The cleaners at Scarborough Town Centre still have their jobs, after a campaign by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 2, their union. Marquise Facilities Group was set to take over the mall's cleaning contract, from current operators, Hurley.

According to a press release, last week, “Marquise made it clear they had no intention of maintaining wages and standards for cleaners working at the mall, and might not have retained the staff at all.” The union credits public pressure as helping their cause.

The release continues: “SEIU, concerned citizens, cleaners from around the city who are part of the Justice for Janitors campaign, CUPE and other union members who are also members of OMERS, pressured the Scarborough Town Centre to ensure Marquise respected the rights of workers at the mall.”

The union had previously planned action today at noon.
