Scappoose man charged with attempted murder

In the early hours of March 30, residents of the 500 block of N.10th Street called 9-1-1 to report that a woman who had been beaten, was bleeding and was partially clothed was seeking shelter.

When St. Helens police officers arrived, they were confronted by a man who was covered in blood, in the middle of the street. The man was identified as Thomas M. Googins, 43, of Scappoose.

As police continued their investigation, they discovered that the victim was bleeding from what appeared to be defensive knife wounds to her neck and hands. She had sought shelter in a nearby residence. She was transported by ambulance to a Portland hospital for treatment of her injuries.

Googins was taken into custody on a variety of charges including attempted murder, Assault 1, Kidnapping 1 and Criminal Mischief 3. He is currently being held in the Columbia County Jail. His bail is set at $151,250.
