Scandinavian royals attend centennial gala

The highlight of the Scandinavian royal visit to New York was undoubtedly the American Scandinavian Foundation Centennial Gala.  The Gala played host to TM King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway, TM King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia along with HRH Princess Madeleine of Sweden, and TRH Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary of DenmarkPrincess Madeleine has been calling New York home for most of the past year, so it made sense she would join her parents for the big event.   Also on hand were the President of Finland and the Presidential couple from Iceland.  Photographers caught a scary moment when, after pausing to let Queen Sonja gather up her gown to ride up the escalator, the King’s secretary Berit Tverslad stepped on her own gown toppling over backwards.  King Harald tried to help, but she was in such an awkward position that he was not able to get her to her feet as she laughed her way towards the top of the escalator.  By this time, King Carl XVI Gustaf came around the corner and pressed the emergency stop button which had his wife clapping for him ‘saving the day’.  Later, however, the Swedish King had a problem of his own when his elbow knocked over Queen Silvia’s full champagne glass onto her evening gown.  With all the hijinks, the gala was still a success and the American Scandinavian Foundation celebrated 100 years of preserving their members’ culture in the US.
